Not tearing up the accord doesn't mean we will do everything to attain unrealistic objectives. We will simply leave Kyoto in force without doing anything. Instead, we will present a series of measures for the environment which are realistic. We have decided to play the honesty card with the population. We will tell the truth. And on the environment, it is that Kyoto is unrealistic.

It seems that this kind of policy makes sense to conservatives. Y'know: sign an accord, but use it more for decoration than anything else.

Actually, that was America's policy during the Clinton era. the administration knew that Kyoto would never be approved by the Senate, but that they wanted to stay at the table to influence the environmental futures of other nations. President Bush was perhaps more honorable for walking away from the poker table since he knew that he was playing with counterfeit money.

Still, I wonder if our grandchildren will be living on floating islands looking through the historical records and saying "Ah, Lawrence Cannon was in favor of the destruction of the world."
