I like this page's analysis of the Electoral College and what can be done to fix some of its deficiencies.

(A nitpick, however: I disagree with the opening statement, that "The United States is the oldest continuously functioning democracy in the world.")

Thanks so much for this. My family has been discussing the Electoral College for two days now, and this offers some of the pros that we hadn't considered.

I've long had problems with the EC. But the status quo has far greater static inertia for others than for people like us, BC. Most people fear change, even positive change. *sigh*

I was especially intrigued with the concept of instant runoff voting. I doubt it will be accepted in the US in my lifetime, but I wonder if something like that might work for Canada. Hmmm...

I'm a big fan of Instant Runoff Voting, which I originally heard of as "Australian Rules Voting".

You're right. We're a republic, or rather a Representative Democracy. Still the oldest continuously EXTANT [Representative] democracy.
