Help me, francophones on my friends' list: how would you translate the word, "écœurante" (heartbreaking? disheartening? Something to do with heart?). The full quotation is:

En Haïti, ce sont 8,2 millions de francophones (plus que la population du Québec) qui vivent dans un état de pauvreté «écœurante», a constaté Denis Paradis au cours d'un premier voyage, en 2000, à l'époque où il était secrétaire parlementaire du ministre des Affaires étrangères, John Manley.

Edit: Ah! "Disgusting" or "nauseating". Sickening might be an appropriate translation.

Yeah, it actually means disgusting. Sickening is good too.
