2016 in Film

For the last few years, I’ve been saying that I feel like it’s been a bad year for film. This year, that trend continues, and I feel like I haven’t seen very many films. I missed the festival again, so that takes away yet another outlet. Many of the films I liked this year were released in theatres in late 2015, and one that made my “top 5” list is actually a 2013 film. But I’m into talking about movies that I’ve seen in 2016, and the release date isn’t as important to me.

This year, few films really stand out as films I will think about and love forever. But if I had to pick a top five, they’d be these ones.

I keep seeing Room in the Carrefour, but not buying it. I've heard really good things about it, but also I think I'm about at my limit for depressing movies for a while. And I've heard it's very depressing.

Something I did buy at Carrefour was The Spy Who Came In From the Cold. Have you seen it? Bridge of Spies reminded me of it somehow. Also pretty gritty. At least one major relationship is ridiculous, but it has some very interesting character development and twists, especially for a movie as old as it is.

I also really want to see Arrival, but apparently it doesn't get here for another month or two.

The Expanse strikes me as really nice hard SF... but the gravity is still messed up. Things fall at Earth-gravity rates on an asteroid. Then they had the bird flying around as if the gravity was lower, but everyone still walks and seems to weigh just what they do on Earth. A silly thing to bounce off of, I know, but it messed with my suspension of judgment fiercely. I like the setup, the worldbuilding and the characters a lot, though.
