(my advice to university students; never befriend a 14-year-old when you're in your second year of university, because 23 years later, they will tease you, just like this)
Because quite simply population studies have shown that the "Millenials" or "Generation Y" and their next generation make up huge numbers of people. Numbers we have not seen since the Baby boom itself in fact. They outnumber Gen X something like 10 to 1. Hence the term the "echo boom". The generation after that promises to be a bit smaller but it's still latrger than our generation ever were.
That said in my line of work there is no shortage of customers to serve, kids with homework or a need to be educated and entertained so I'm happy.
I like kids. I deal with them well. They like me.
Also my last name is young and if you are meeting other people whose last name is also young then I guess everyone would in fact be "young all of a sudden!"
Its kind of odd, folks my age (around me, it may not be this way everywhere) are not into having kids but my friends just a few years younger are having 3-4 kids. Its crazy but they are enjoying it.

That *does* explain why I see hipsters taking over parts of Brooklyn in swarms. So it's not my imagination! Thanks!
