Spanking Director Makes Masterpiece

The Film Festival is in town. I've never actually been to the Film Festival, for no very good reason.

My friend Harry had an extra ticket to see Secretary, and invited me to join him. It was a good flick. Touched on a lot of interesting dynamics in BDSM -- self-acceptance, coming out, and does the top have the power or the bottom? I also liked the way that narrative focalization was on the Maggie Gyllenhaal character, rather than the James Spader character. Harry was disappointed that it wasn't more hard core (personally, I think he was hoping for light porn).

This was the Canadian premiere of the film, so many people from the production crew were there, as well as the director (Steven Shainberg) and the lead actors. The director held a question and answer period at the end, which was interesting. Someone reviewing the film for a university newspaper asked him for a hook line, and he said, "Spanking Director Makes Masterpiece!"

Well with Spader's last film of a similar topic being Crash it's hard not to expect it to be light porn. :-P I saw the trailers for it on Rogers and I have to say I'm really interested (and they have a cool website with a nifty trick to open various areas if you screw up you get punished. :))

Personaly I think in a healthy BDSM relationship the top and the bottom have truly equal amounts of power (even though the top controls things the bottom is never in a position where they feel truly threatened.) I'm looking forward to the new Chronenburg film Spider, it looks creepy as hell and REALLY interesting. And for once it doesn't look like he's simply out to be the most balls out offensive film maker of the show, he actually looks like he wants to tell a story. :) I just wish I had the money to go to some of these but they'll be out in theatres soon enough and I can go then. :)
