Thought for the Day

"What is clear to me is that we, Canada, have no legal basis on which to justify our inaction in allowing a Canadian citizen and the first-ever child soldier to be prosecuted for war-crimes in an illegal process," [Romeo] Dallaire said in a written statement.

"Frankly, I think it is a distraction from the issue at hand to engage in a debate over the semantics of my response to a loaded question."

Tory continues to attack Dallaire over Khadr, The Toronto Star

For what it's worth, I agree with Senator Dallaire.

If the case were cut and dry with absolute clear evidence he did throw the grenade, I could see Canada saying it is not going to negotiate on behalf of a 'war criminal'. But clearly the case is NOT cut and dry; there still being some question whether he is totally or even any part guilty. At the very lease he could be declared a Prisoner of War, not a War Criminal which would lead to his eventual release. To my knowledge no German children were prosecuted as War Criminals, at least by the Western Allies, (who knows what the Soviets may have done).

I think the someone among the US and Canadian governments just does not know when to let go of a hot stove. Of course they are politicians...
