Clinton discussed environmental policy; crime policy; taxation policy; foreign policy, including development-aid policy; and a dozen other sets of ideas for government in ways that carried the authenticity of detail while appealing to a few broad themes. This is the essence of synthesis, the highest ideal in good European schools, dismissed or ignored in North American schools: the insightful connection between themes and details.
